On NW-1, LAD of 2 mtr is being provided between Haldia and Patna for a distance of 1020 for about 330 days in a year. It is planned to maintain 2 mtr LAD between Haldia and Patna and 1.5 m between Patna-Varanasi for about 330 days in a year. On NW-1, floating terminal facilities have been provided by IWAI at Haldia, Karagola, Bhagalpur, Munger, Patna, Varanasi, Chunar and Allahabad. Other terminals such as TT Shed and Jugarnath Ghat of CIWTC and permanent RCC jetties at Farakka and Pakur belonging to Farakka Barrage Project also exist on this waterway. A scheme for permanent terminal at Gaighat has been approved and construction work is in progress. Regular talweg surveys are being conducted and river notices are issued for the entire waterway on fortnightly basis. Day navigational marks are also being maintained. A scheme for provision of night navigation facilities between Calcutta and Farakka is also under implementation. A scheme for procurement of two Cutter Suction Dredging units for NW-1 is under implementation.

The Central Inland Water Transport Ltd. (CIWTC) and private operators such as M/s Vivada Inland Waterways Ltd., Kolkata are operating river services on National Waterway No.1. The cargo moved in Haldia-Kolkata-Farakka-Patna route during the year 2003-04 was 786159 M.T.
