Trade Facilitation Center for Inland Waterways and Coastal Transportation

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) came into existence on 27th October 1986 for development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation. The Authority primarily undertakes projects for development and maintenance of IWT infrastructure on national waterways through grant received from Ministry of Shipping. The head office of the Authority is at Noida. The Authority also has its regional offices at Patna, Kolkata, Guwahati, Kochi, Bhubaneshwar and sub-offices at Allahabad, Varanasi, Farakka, Sahibganj, Haldia, Swroopganj, Hemnagar, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Silchar, Kollam and Vijayawada.

On 11 Nov 2022, IWAI achieved yet another milestone with the inauguration of Trade Facilitation Center for Inland Waterways and Coastal Transportation by H’ble Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. This Centre will function under the aegis of Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The new facility has been created on the single-window concept wherein all data to facilitate Cargo Trade will be made available on this portal.

Primary Objective of Trade Facilitation Center

  • Acting as single data facilitation center for monitoring and implementation of the Cargo Trade through Multimodal facilities.
  • Providing stakeholder interface.
  • Fostering a culture of trade facilitation among various agencies involved with the regulation and infrastructure development associated with trade.
  • Planning and promoting most cost-effective Transportation of Cargo through multimode of Ports, Road and Railways.
  • Promotion of IWT and Coastal Transportation.
  • Promoting most cost-effective method
  • Vessel deployment.
  • Training and capacity building of human resources in accordance with Inland Vessel(IV) Rules under IV Act 2021, through IMU/State ATIs/Training Institute of IWAI.
  • Enabling Inter-agency coordination by bringing all involved agencies under a common umbrella.

Trade Facilitation Center

Inland Waterways Authority of India, an autonomous body under MoPSW had been constituted vide IWAI Act, 1985 for the regulation and development of Inland Waterways for the purpose of Shipping and Navigation and for mattersconnected therewith or incidental thereto.

In order to make it easy and convenient for all the stakeholders to study and use the inland waterways for commercial purposes, IWAI has created a portal for Trade Facilitation for ease of doing business


Trade Facilitation Centre, amongst other, provides information related to:
  • The waterways with fairway channels, depths, vessel locations,navigational aids etc.
  • Terminal facilities including availability of cargo handling equipment,storage areas etc.
  • Various tariffs for use of terminals, waterways etc
  • Type of cargo and passenger movements with quantities, OD pairs etc.
  • IBP protocol route regulations along with NOC and permissions.
  • Type of vessels operating on waterways.
  • Assistance provided by IWAI including pilots, tugs etc.
  • Vessel Tracking System.
